The day that I quit my full-time job was the most terrifying day of my life. I can remember walking in, with Wrenny Penny, and looking at my amazing boss and saying, “I’m not coming back to work.” I didn’t have any clients. Chris and I had just purchased a domain name, talked to a few friends, and decided to take a leap. Celebrating my “Independence Day” is always kind of awesome – because I can look back at the amazing things that have happened since I decided to follow a dream.
Sometimes, I can’t believe that it’s only been two years. Then I see all the things that have happened:
- 59 photoshoots (what?!)
- 4 magazine covers
- 79 features
- 30+ social media clients
- 3 employees
- 8 websites
Oh and in the midst of all that? I started a company with one of my favorite people in the world, expanded that company into two divisions, and ya know, lived my life.
Taking the leap into going full-time is terrifying. I’ve told you guys about the time about three months AFTER my Independence Day that I sat in my closet and cried about it (here’s the blog post – it’s one of my favorite ones). Actually, going back and finding the link, I realized that I didn’t tell the whole story.
So here we go:
It was January. I was officially done at my job (I put in two months notice). It was like, a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. Piper was at school, Wren was taking a nap. It was 2pm and I didn’t have anything to do, so I started to organize my closet. I went into a full-on freak out. How was it 2:00pm and I had time to clean out a closet? I had been working 60+ hours a week. Where did this time come from?! Who quits a perfectly good, reliable job to open a company that hadn’t been proven yet?!
So I called a friend. And that amazing friend gave me the best piece of advice that I’ve ever been given. He said, “You have a choice in this moment. You can fly, or you can fall. And baby bird, you gotta fly.”
2 years later, here I am. I’m so grateful to my clients who have given me incredible support. I couldn’t have imagined that I would be so lucky to be here. None of this could have happened without my amazing family. My husband who supports me unconditionally. He’ll literally move mountains to make sure that Misty Saves the Day is successful (or build websites!). Not only that, but he totally takes care of the kids multiple nights a week so that I can attend networking events or do photoshoots or go to weddings. I have an incredibly supportive group of friends, too, who give me awesome advice, listen, and make sure that I don’t work myself into oblivion.
That girl that was crying in her closet two years ago? Now I’m so busy that I’m blogging at midnight!
In conclusion (because this has been a long one, y’all!):
