We were writing this blog post when Meta released Meta Muse. People were upset and immediately responded. We were upset too and we wanted to respond.
Our business is built on doing what is best for our clients and while the internet storm brew, we were talking about putting it into our newsletter to inform all of our clients. Taking action in the steps that we could, we began to toggle off on their accounts. And so was everyone else on the internet, it seemed.
Then Meta responded and in the direction of what consumers wanted. Privacy and consent were on the line and we took a little sigh of relief that Meta listened to what people wanted.
Is AI here to stay? Yes. Are there some useful things about AI? Yes. Is it so new and fresh that we don’t have the full picture of what is at stake? Also, yes.
Voicing your opinion DOES make a difference and this is exactly why it is important to stay up to date on the changing features. We know that you don’t want one more thing to worry about, and that is why our social media company strives to not only make sure you know what’s happening but also ensure your settings then reflect your goals.
Your voice matters against AI, and it works!
We not only have social media managers we have a Kelley! Whose main job title is to look out for things like this and educate all of our social media managers when things like this happen.
We don’t want to create fear or panic but this is why this still matters:
Although Meta did change this particular setting, we still want to have the conversation of why this matters. When you think of your business social media accounts do you think of AI using your photo, your headshot, your funny image of your team to generate content? Even though you are a business and your account is public that still feels like a violation of your privacy right? And what if you are a non-profit sharing a photo of a child or family that you sponsored and helped?
Without creating fear or panic since the setting is changed, we want to start a conversation about it. So when something else comes along like this, we all are better informed about it.
Where is the line in the sand to what is wrong and what is right when it comes to AI?
When Meta originally rolled out Meta Muse, which is a text-to-image AI generator for Meta AI, if you have a public Instagram account, you were automatically opted IN to giving Muse full access to your images.
UNLESS, you toggled it off in settings. Quietly they changed this in your settings and didn’t bring attention to it.
Here’s why this mattered so much to all of us at Misty Saves the Day, and still does:
A lot of our clients are artists and creatives. They put a lot of work into the products that they share on their accounts, and we don’t want them to be an easy target for AI to take their work without them knowing.
We are protective of our clients and we wanted to teach them how to turn it off in their settings. But if you aren’t our client, yet, we want you to still be able to utilize this information too.
And we haven’t even mentioned how this makes us feel about personal photos or merely pictures of your faces and your employees faces. This got us a little fired up!
They changed this setting after the uproar on the internet but here is how to change this setting, should it happen again:
- Go to your settings.
- Click Sharing and Reuse
- Switch this part off “Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta.”
Again, this only appeared for public accounts, which is every business on social media. We were seeing it with audio as well, and if you use audio with you speaking, you would want to toggle that off too.
If it concerns our clients consent and privacy, we want to take action the best way we can.
Meta did the right thing in this situation and changed it. They listened to us, and they listened to you. I know we are in an era of AI increasing and finding the balance of what is good and what is bad in these different scenarios. Don’t give up if you see something that doesn’t feel right to you. Speak up, speak out, it works!
As always, we will be watching these things and educating our team and our clients when things arise.
