5 Types of Instagram Reels for Businesses and When to Use Them

If you’ve ever sat down to create a Reel and immediately thought:

Okay… but what kind of Reel am I supposed to make?

You’re not alone.

One of the easiest ways to overcomplicate social media is to think every Reel needs to follow the same formula. Fast cuts. Trending audio. A hook in the first second. Talking to the camera. Pointing at text. Dancing. We’re overwhelmed just reading that all together.

But luckily we know that different types of Reels serve different purposes. You don’t have to do every thing in one reel. Sometimes you want to quickly show off a product. Or you want to give people a feel for an entire business. You have a story worth telling.

And sometimes? You just want to make people laugh.

At Misty Saves the Day, we use different types of Reels for different clients, businesses, events, and goals. The best part is that you don’t need to master every single style.

You just need to understand what you’re trying to communicate and when to communicate it in a particular way.

There isn’t just one way to make a Reel, and there shouldn’t be. Here are five types of Instagram Reels for businesses that you can use, depending on what you have to share and what you’re hoping the content will accomplish.

1. The Quick, Flashy Reel: When You Have a Lot to Show

This is the Reel for when you have products, items, food, inventory, or multiple things you want people to see.

Think:

  • A new shipment arriving
  • A restaurant showing off several menu items
  • New products in a boutique
  • A sale or promotion
  • A quick look at everything happening at an event

These Reels typically use shorter clips, quicker transitions, and music that keeps things moving.

The goal isn’t necessarily to tell someone’s entire life story.

It’s to make them stop scrolling and say: Wait… I want to look at that again.

One example is from one of our social media managers, Sandy, Charlottesville takeover Reel. With a lot to see and experience, a quicker editing style helped capture multiple moments without dragging the Reel out.

The quick, flashy style works especially well when the visuals can do the talking. You don’t always need a long explanation. Sometimes you just need to show people what you’ve got.

2. The Walk-Through Reel: When You Want People to Experience Your Business

On the other end of the spectrum, sometimes you don’t want to rush. A walk-through Reel gives viewers the opportunity to slow down and experience your business before they ever walk through the door. These are great for:

  • Restaurants
  • Coffee shops
  • Retail stores
  • Hotels
  • Event venues
  • Gyms
  • New business locations

Instead of quickly cutting from one thing to the next, a walk-through Reel can guide someone through the space. What does it look like when they walk in? What will they see? What’s the atmosphere? What makes the experience different? Misty has created several walk-through-style Reels featuring local businesses, and this format is a great reminder that sometimes the best content is simply letting people see what it’s actually like to be there. Think of it as a little virtual visit. The goal isn’t always to sell one specific item. Sometimes the goal is to make someone think:  Okay, I want to go there.

3. The Storytelling or Recap Reel: When Something Happens That Deserves to be Remembered

You don’t have to make every Reel promotional. Sometimes something happens in your business or community that deserves to be documented.

Things like:

  • An event.
  • A milestone.
  • A team outing.
  • A grand opening.
  • A fundraiser.
  • A community project.
  • A really great day.

That’s where a storytelling or recap Reel comes in. Our MSTD Camp recap is a perfect example. Instead of simply posting a collection of random clips from the event, the Reel helps capture what happened and gives people a sense of the experience. These types of Reels can also help people who weren’t there feel like they were part of it.

And for those who were? They get to relive it.

Storytelling Reels can build connection because they’re often less focused on selling and more focused on sharing.

And here’s the bonus: when people see how much fun, value, or community is happening at your events, they may be a little more interested in showing up for the next one. People purchase from a business but they become regulars or loyal customers because of the way they feel when they are there.  A. storytelling reel gives them a window into how they would feel at your business.

4. The Funny or Trend-Based Reel: When You Want to Show Some Personality

Yes, trends can be useful—but only when they make sense for your business.

We don’t believe you should force your employees into a trending Reel just because someone on the internet said it’s popular. But if a trend fits your team, personality, or brand?

Go for it.

One of our favorite examples started with what appeared to be a simple question:

“What would you do if you ran into one of your clients at the grocery store?”

Seems harmless enough, right?  Well… that’s not actually the question we asked our team.

We asked them a much more intense question, then paired their answers with the much more innocent question above. At the end of the Reel, we revealed what we had actually asked.

So, naturally, the answers seemed a little shocking. That’s what made it funny!

This type of Reel isn’t designed to explain our services or promote a specific package. It’s simply entertaining. It gives people a chance to get to know our team, see our personalities, and understand a little more about who we are behind the screens.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what your social media needs.

People work with people. A funny or trend-based Reel can be a great way to show the personalities behind your business, as long as it actually feels like you.

5. The Tutorial or Product-Based Reel: When You Have Something to Teach or Demonstrate

Some Reels are all about helping people understand something. How does a product work? How do you use it?

What does a service include? How do you order? What’s the difference between two options?

Tutorial and product-based Reels are useful because they answer questions visually.

Instead of writing three paragraphs explaining something, you can simply show it in a few seconds.

Think:

  • How to style a product
  • How a service works
  • How something is made
  • What happens when a customer arrives
  • How to use a product
  • A before-and-after transformation
  • Tips from someone on your team

These Reels can be simple, helpful, and incredibly useful for potential customers who are still learning about your business. You can pin them to the top of your page, where they remain easily accessible.

And the good news? You don’t need to turn every employee into a professional instructor. A quick demonstration and a few helpful clips may be all you need.

So… Which Type of Reel Should You Make?

It depends.

Not every piece of content should have the same goal. If you have a lot of new products to show, maybe you need something quick and flashy.

Just opened a beautiful new location? Slow down and give people a tour.

If your team hosted an incredible event, tell the story.

Did someone on your staff say something hilarious? Put them on camera.

Finally, if you have knowledge that can help your customers, teach them something. Educate them on your services to make their experience as positive as it can be.

The easiest way to decide what kind of Reel to make is to stop asking:

“What’s trending right now?”

And start asking:

“What do we have to share?”

Because chances are, the answer is already happening somewhere inside your business.

You Don’t Have to Make Every Type of Reel

This is important! You don’t have to create five different styles of Reels every single week.

You don’t have to chase every trend. And you definitely don’t need to dance on camera if that’s not your thing.

Social media works best when it feels natural to the business and the people behind it.

That’s why we don’t approach every client with the exact same content plan.

Some businesses have beautiful products that deserve quick, visual Reels. Others have incredible spaces that people need to experience. Some have a team full of personalities just waiting to be put on camera.

And some?

They have a whole lot going on, they just need someone to help them figure out what is actually worth sharing.

That’s where we come in.

At Misty Saves the Day, we help businesses find the content that already exists within their day-to-day operations and turn it into something people want to watch.

You don’t have to fit your business into one type of Reel. You just have to find the right way to share what your business already has going on.
