Let me preface this post by saying this: I am not a person who readily admits that she’s wrong. In fact, if you ask a majority of my friends, they’ll tell you that I always think I’m right, most likely to a fault. Here’s what I’m ready to stand up and admit today: my friends are usually right.
A lot of times those around us can see things that we can’t see right in front of our faces. Maybe they’re the things that we are choosing not to see. I have a confession: my garage looked like an episode of hoarders. That’s not an exaggeration. It’s been two years since my mom died, and I hadn’t gone through her stuff.
My amazing husband spent a couple of days a few months ago going through things with me, and we hauled things off to the dump. It’s amazing how many things in there, whether hers or ours, were just trash. We hold onto all these things like they’re our memories, but they aren’t. The people that helped make them are our memories.
My New Year’s Resolution is this:
I’m going to try to to live a more simple life. Over the next few weeks, I plan on going through my house and SERIOUSLY decluttering things. No one needs 100 glasses. I’m pretty sure I have that many though. Why not put all my photos in albums instead of letting them sit in picture frames in boxes because there isn’t any more room on the shelves. I’m going to get rid of the things that I’ve had since high school that aren’t important (I don’t need my planner from 2003, guys. I just don’t.).
It’s not just the clutter, though – it’s life in general. One of my favorite memories this past year was my trip to the mountains. No phone (not by choice), no television – just me, my husband, and one of my best friends. It was so much fun to sit and laugh and not worry or feel tethered by work. I don’t just want to live more simply in my home with the things that I have, but I also want to live a simpler life – step away. Turn off the devices. Not be so “digitally distracted” – whether it’s television, social media – anything.
I want to be present.
I had a friend who said something to me about my garage and the insane amount of junk that was piled up in it. I’m glad for that person. You need people in your life sometimes, especially people who you don’t live with or aren’t directly connected to your situation, to show you that you might be a little bit nuts, or that you could be doing things differently.
I know that this insanely personal story may not make a lot of sense. Let’s bring it full circle with Misty Saves the Day: I want to be your outside source. I love consulting with people, styling their shoots, helping you make the tough marketing decisions, and watching your business flourish. Sometimes having that outside person, the person who can see beyond the immediate for you and your business, is just the person you need to “declutter your garage”. Live and work more simply. Let someone show you that there’s a better, easier way to get things done.
