Taking another photographer’s headshots is always a little daunting. It’s even more daunting when that person is your best friend – and the person who taught you how to take photos. I always get nervous (and I shouldn’t – he basically chooses more than half the locations). We hadn’t updated Mike’s headshots in almost two years, so it was past time. Mike decided to do some more lifestyle headshots – things that he loves to do. We started with his living room with his fish tanks and his records – very Mike vibes.
We left his house and went to First Landing State Park and took some photos there – then found a pretty cool parking garage for something a little different, too. He was going for variety, and he definitely did a good job making sure we had it.
Another day (yes, we did these in two days), we went to All Hands Pottery where he’s been taking pottery classes. He’s unreasonably good at it.
Mike owns a photography company called Dragon Studio. You’ve seen all the photos that he takes of us – and you know that they’re great. We didn’t take any photos of him with his camera or actually working (I take behind-the-scenes photos for him all the time anyway). It was about telling the story of who he is – because, at the end of the day, it’s not just about taking good photos. When you hire a photographer, you’ve got to like that person and connect with them.

Next time you’re thinking about doing something different for your headshots- think about the things that you love to do. At the end of the day, if you’re REALLY looking to connect with people, it’s at the very least a conversation starter.
