Why Your Social Media Isn’t Working (Hint: It’s Not the Fancy Stuff)

Did you know we have an Education Manager on our team? Her name is Kelley, and she’s helped us create this valuable resource focused on what happens when the basics quietly get skipped—and how to reset with a simple, consistent social media strategy that actually works.

She’s the pro at this, so take it away Kelley:

At Misty Saves The Day, we spend a lot of time talking about strategy, trends, and what’s changing in social media. But every now and then, we find ourselves coming back to the same conversation… not about what’s new, but about what’s missing.

Because most of the time, when an account isn’t working the way someone wants it to, it’s not because they need something more advanced.

It’s because the basics quietly got skipped.

Not in an obvious way, and not in a “we’re doing everything wrong” kind of way. It usually happens when life gets busy, posting becomes inconsistent, and social media turns into something you get to when you have time. And then suddenly, it’s been two weeks. Or you’re posting, but it feels rushed. Or you’re sharing things, but not really connecting with anyone. That’s usually where things start to fall off. Not because the content isn’t good, but because the foundation isn’t steady.

The accounts that work, the ones that actually build momentum over time, are almost always doing a few simple things really well.

They show up regularly, not perfectly and not every day, but consistently enough that people start to recognize them. They talk to their audience like real people. They respond to comments, they answer messages, and they don’t just post and disappear. And they share things that feel human. Not overly polished, not overthought, just real moments, real updates, and real insight into what they do.

There’s no complicated formula behind it and no constant chasing of trends. It’s just showing up, staying present, and giving people a reason to come back.

And here’s the part that gets overlooked the most. Consistency doesn’t mean doing more. It means doing what you said you were going to do, over and over again.

If you post three times a week, stick to that. If you check messages every morning, keep doing that. If you share behind the scenes moments when they happen, don’t overthink them.

It’s the repetition that builds familiarity, and familiarity is what builds trust. People don’t usually follow you and immediately become a client. They watch, they get a feel for you, and they come back a few times. Consistency is what makes that possible.

So if things feel off right now, or like your content isn’t landing the way it used to, there’s a good chance you don’t need a new strategy. You just need to come back to the basics.

Show up, stay consistent, and keep it real. The rest tends to build from there.
