Outwire 757 Feature with Mad Hatter Vintage Rentals

Kristina of Mad Hatter Vintage Rentals did an amazing job of coming up with such a fun, cool, and eclectic concept. This same-sex shoot with a mid-century modern meets West Elm inspiration. It would play on the amazing architecture and history of the buildings in Downtown Norfolk. Here’s the write-up that we did for the feature in Outwire 757:

The mid-century modern look has never gone out of style, so this uniquely inspired shoot focused on pairing the classic look of mid-century modern with warehouse chic in what turned out to be a gorgeous pairing. We really wanted to highlight something unique to our area – a midcentury look meets West Elm with an industrial twist.

Our grooms are wearing coordinating attire, each with his own individual personality. The place settings showcase the amazing geometric patterns of the era, with the use of vintage rentals paired with modern touches. Each had extraordinary jewelry provided by Either Ore Jeweler Strawbridge, mixing metals and textures to create a cohesive look with our grooms as well as the rest of the shoot.

Beyond the gorgeous mid-century modern looks that you’ll see scattered throughout the spread, we really wanted to call attention to the industrial spaces in Norfolk that have incredible potential as venues and more. With the revitalization of certain areas of the city, spaces like Fawn Street Studios and more turn into artist co-ops, venues, and more. The industrial vibe was crucial, as we wanted to pay homage to the history of the architecture of Norfolk, and showcase beautiful crumbling brick with pristinely kept vintage furnishings.

We were fortunate that our venue housed some fabulous locations for portraits, and ended up with some amazing ones of our two grooms and their precious pup, with hair and makeup by Flawless on Site and Blush Tones. Kristina of Mad Hatter Vintage Rentals, the person behind the concept of the shoot, was able to provide fantastic furnishings and more to better accentuate the venue – from an amazing bar and food area, to a stunning white mid-century sofa. We wanted the florals to simply be an extension of the beautiful decor that Kristina styled so beautifully.

We wanted to keep the palette uniquely neutral, with golds, black, woodgrain, and small pops of mustard throughout to stay true to the era, but also provide a new spin on a traditional color palette. Our cakes, expertly designed by Whipped Up by Mimi, stuck to that black and gold neutral theme, but each provided a different take on the textures and concepts throughout the shoot.

It would’ve been awful to forget food – and with amazing caterers like East Beach Catering in our area, we couldn’t help but reach out for delicious small bites and appetizers for our couple. You’ll see some fantastically crafted details, like our geometric wall, from Jollity & Co. that really give the concept even more life.
