Embrace Your Weird {It’s Only As Weird As You Make It}

An awesome rider at Cyclebar Red Mill said something to me the other day that really got me. She said that she woke up the other morning with me on her mind, and that she wanted me to know to embrace my fun and quirky side, and not to fight it. She said that she could tell it was something that I struggle with. Out of nowhere, she said these things and it made me feel all the feelings. Part of that is just the awesomeness that is Cyclebar Red Mill, and the other part is just how great she is. It got me thinking, though: I do TOTALLY try to suppress my weird sometimes – and forget that. I should embrace it.

One of my favorite people in this world likes to say that it’s only as weird as you make it – and he’s so right, too. We spend all this time trying to conform and fit in that we don’t actually take the time to get to know ourselves and embrace all the weird. Be fucking weird, man.

Your weird is what makes you, you. It’s what makes your friends and family love you – and it’s what makes clients come to you. It should also be what you love about yourself and you should share it with the world. I’m a huge fan of making your social media a little more personal and what you put out there a little more personal – to your comfort level. It’s all about what’s right for you and your brand.

And for me? I’m quirky. I like to ride real bikes and fake bikes. I’ve been going camping a lot and going on all the adventures. Give me a Milky Way night sky and you’ll make me the happiest person in the world. I sing in the car- LOUDLY and to the point of sheer silliness. I really, really REALLY love my friends. I dance like I’m polishing a bowling ball. I love every single second of it. I legitimately hate the beach and sand but will suffer through it for fun with friends and family.

Be yourself. If someone thinks it’s weird or they don’t like it, forget them. It’s not about that. It’s about being who you are and knowing that it really is only as weird as you make it. So if you’re cool with who you are, the right people to surround yourself with will not only be okay with it, they’ll love you just a little bit more.

Not only that, but the right clients will come, too – the people who fit you, your business, and what you want to do with it. I think so many people spend so much time looking at what everyone else is doing that they aren’t finding ways to set themselves apart. Your weirdness will help with that. Don’t put on the front that you’re the same as everyone else. You AREN’T and that’s exactly what your client wants.

The world would be pretty boring if we were all the same. So don’t be.
