If you run a business in Hampton Roads, you already know this: This area runs on connection.
It’s the familiar faces walking into your shop. It’s the “I saw you on Instagram!” at checkout. It’s the way people in Virginia Beach and Norfolk rally around local businesses they love.
And here’s the truth most people miss, social media isn’t just about posting. It’s about building that same community feeling, that you have in real life, just online.
So how do you actually do that?
Let’s break it down.
Start Thinking Local (Not Just “Online”)
Before we get into tactics, here’s the mindset shift:
You’re not trying to reach everyone. You’re trying to reach your people. The ones who live, work, shop, and support right here in the Hampton Roads.
When your content feels local, it feels familiar. And when it feels familiar, people trust it. They will recognize the views, the backgrounds, the places you go and feature.
Tag Local Businesses (and Mean It)
This isn’t about randomly tagging accounts for reach. It’s about building real relationships. This is some of our team taking a class at All Hands Pottery, a local pottery studio that is our client.
Some ideas are:
- Tag the coffee shop you grabbed your morning latte from
- Tag the boutique you partnered with for an event
- Tag the vendor you genuinely love working with
- If you are hired by businesses tag the ones that are your clients. Give them a spotlight.
- You don’t have to stop at tagging! You can invite them to be a collaborator on a post or reel. More on that below!
When you tag intentionally, two things happen:
- They see it (and often share it)
- Their audience sees you
That’s how local visibility grows, organically.
Show Up at Local Events (and Document It)
Farmers markets, pop-ups, networking events, volunteering, and community days. This is where your content comes alive.
Don’t just attend—capture it:
- Quick videos of your booth
- Photos of your team interacting with customers
- Behind-the-scenes setup moments
- A quick “we’re here today!” story post
It’s not bragging or saying “look at me!” It’s showing you are more than your business. You care, you invest, and you show up!
This does a few things:
- This shows you personally but this also says a lot about how you will be for your customer!
- Shows you’re active in the community.
- Gives your audience a reason to come see you in real life.
And that’s where the magic happens.
Collaborate With Nearby Brands
If you want to grow faster, the key is to not do it alone.
Some of the best-performing content we see comes from collaborations. Have you heard of this particular feature?
- A boutique + a coffee shop
- A realtor + a local stager
- A salon + a photographer
- A wedding venue + all of the vendors it takes on a wedding day
- Travel and Tourism account + local Air BNBs, local shops
- A bakery + a local farmer they get fruit from
- A pottery studio + the artist makers
- A bed and breakfast in the mountains + an adventure tours company.
You’re sharing audiences, building credibility, and creating content that feels fresh.
Tip: Don’t just tag the business in Instagram. When you go to tag select invite collaborator. This takes it a step further, with allowing the other business or individual(s) to have it on their feed and show up to their audience as they scroll as well.
But the best part? It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Start with:
- A giveaway
- A styled shoot
- Work together on a post or Reel
- A simple “local spotlight” feature
Make Your Content Feel Like a Conversation
This is where most businesses miss the mark.
If your posts feel like ads, people scroll. If they feel like a conversation, people stay.
There’s a time and a place for graphics perfectly designed but what we have noticed is that customers want real moments and content.
Try:
- Asking simple questions (“Have you tried this yet?”)
- Sharing real moments, not just polished ones
- Writing captions the way you actually talk
- Responding to every comment and message
Community isn’t built in one post—it’s built in the back-and-forth of a conversation.
Be Consistent (Even When It Feels Small)
Community doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built post by post, interaction by interaction.
The businesses that win on social media in Hampton Roads aren’t always the loudest. They’re the most consistent.
They show up in their community and they stay connected with people.
Where Misty Saves the Day Team Comes In
We’ve worked with businesses all across Hampton Roads, and we see the same thing over and over:
They don’t always need more ideas. They need help executing consistently. The need help keeping the conversations going with their community.
That’s where we come in.
From content sessions that give you a month (or more) of photos in one day to social media management that keeps your brand active, local, and engaging: We help you show up, without the stress.
We say this a lot!
At the end of the day, social media isn’t about chasing trends or going viral.
It’s about being recognizable. Being relatable. Being part of your community.
Because when people feel connected to your business they don’t just follow you. They support you.
