Don’t even get me started on how incredible it was to photograph the McKendree Family at their Virginia Beach home. Their house is surrounded by the exact type of landscape that I naturally gravitate toward. Even better was the small circus of dogs that were never far behind. I was lucky enough to meet this trio after they bid on a family session with me at a local auction…
and WON!
Just goes to show, you never know how people will come into your life or the ways you will find a connection to them. For example, we immediately bonded over the fact that we both named our children after birds. However, it was the things that make us different – the parts of their story that are so uniquely theirs – that I remember most.
Jennifer works for Operation Smile, an incredible non-profit that provides life-saving cleft surgeries to children all over the world. She was even part of an incredible effort to provide to hot meals to front-line workers during COVID. I truly enjoyed learning more about her while walking around the place that she feels most comfortable.
Not to be left out, her husband has his own set of incredible stories. Will was part of an incredible effort at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in which they reconfigured their masks to create a more inclusive experience for their patients. After recognizing that Will reads lips and relies on visual cues for communication, they developed a clear mask to ensure that he was able to fully experience the birth of his daughter, Cooper. The fact that he had a chance to be part of that is just plain cool.
Really, really cool.
Cheers to chance for bringing this sweet family in front of my camera. I hope this isn’t the last time I get to spend time with the McKendrees!
Family photography doesn’t have to be all formal poses and sculpted landscapes. It can be in your home or your backyard, surrounded by baby toys and barking dogs. It’s not about achieving a standardized version of the “perfect” picture. It’s about honoring the wholesome weirdness of your own family. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, give me a call at 757-620-0082!
