Why did you go into business for yourself? Did you think that you had a novel idea that needed to be implement? Do you have talent that you could sell to the world? Whatever your reason may be, ultimately, I think we all went into business for ourselves because we wanted to have a say over our lives. For whatever reason, business owners forget that almost as soon as we start our businesses. We forget that we can say no.
Need a day off? No one needs to know that you took a day off for yourself. You don’t have to post it all over social media. You can just tell a client you aren’t available to meet that day, or you can take up to 24 hours (or more) to answer emails. Want to take a vacation? You dictate whether or not you’re able to take a week off. As business owners, we have the ability to tell our clients whether or not we’re available. Just because you aren’t working with a client doesn’t mean that you’re available. Don’t forget to schedule days off for yourself, vacations with your family, or nights out with friends. It’s okay to say no if time doesn’t permit – and the time to work isn’t every waking hour.
Don’t be so scared about booking the next client that you burn yourself out into oblivion. I’ve been given a lot of great advice about being a business owner, but one of my favorites is that you can’t live to work. Remember the things that matter most – because when all of this is gone and you’ve retired, that’s what you need to hold onto. I’m the queen of not always taking this advice – until this week. I’m looking forward to taking time off with friends and family, and enjoying this crazy life that I’ve built with my awesome husband.
