The Importance of Being Inclusive {Pride Month}

Are you an inclusive business? It’s Pride Month and as I scroll through my newsfeed, I see a lot of fantastic things happening throughout the community.  I see fantastic photographers taking photos of same-sex weddings, venues highlighting the LGBTQ weddings that have happened at their space, and more.  One thing that I think a lot of small business owners forget, especially in the wedding industry, is that there are certain things that you can do and say (and showcase!) to show your inclusion.  It’s so easy to do, that sometimes it just doesn’t make sense that it isn’t already done.  These small things are just a few ideas:

  1. Don’t refer to couples as brides and grooms collectively, particularly in things like your contact form.  Saying things like “partner” and “couple” read more inclusive, and don’t ask someone to take on a title that doesn’t fit them.
  2. Consider joining networking organizations that promote inclusion.  Locally, in Hampton Roads, there are things like HRBOR, and being part of the Weddings with Pride showcase.  Online badges are great to put on your website whenever you’re a part of any organization, so these are just an additional step that allow LGBTQ couples that you’re ready to serve them.
  3. Don’t have any LGBTQ weddings to showcase?  Consider putting together a styled wedding inspiration with a couple to include on your website.  Always be honest about the fact that it was styled, but the extra effort is doubly appreciated.

I am happy to say that I’ll gladly serve anyone – and I believe in loving everyone.  If you’re like-minded and still have questions – let me know!  I’d love to help you showcase your business as being more inclusive!
